Market mapping as a product

Buy-side · M&A Advisor Blueprint

A market map is the deliverable that justifies a buy-side retainer. Done well, it tells a client something they did not know about their own industry.

What it contains

Every company in the defined space, with: revenue estimate, employee count, ownership structure, owner age or tenure where discoverable, sub-segment, geography, recent transactions, and an assessment of acquisition likelihood.

Then a segmentation. Not alphabetical — by strategic fit. Which targets bring capability, which bring geography, which bring customers, which bring only scale.

Where the data comes from

Corporate registries, industry associations, trade directories, licensing bodies, customer lists, supplier lists, job postings, LinkedIn, local business press, credit reports, and filings where they exist.

None of it is complete and all of it is triangulable. Three imperfect sources agreeing is usually enough for a screening estimate, and the estimate only needs to be good enough to rank.

What makes it valuable

Completeness. Clients are routinely surprised by companies they had never heard of. Finding those is the point.

Assessment, not listing. A list is a database. A map has a view: this one is likely to sell because the owner is 68 with no successor; this one will not sell at any price; this one has been approached twice and refused.

Prioritisation. Rank by fit and by likelihood. The client should be able to pick up the top ten and start.

Turning it into a process

The map drives structured outreach. Tiered by priority, sequenced so the client is not approaching twenty companies simultaneously in a small industry where everyone talks.

The adviser makes the approach, which matters: it preserves the client's anonymity early and removes the awkwardness of a competitor calling directly. Discretion is much of what is being bought.

Work this through

Build a complete market map for a defined industry and geography — at least forty companies, with revenue estimate, ownership, owner tenure and acquisition likelihood.

Segment by strategic rationale and rank the top ten. Then write the one-page summary a client would actually read.
